Divisions

AAS Winner 2IHSDTA Divisions are designed to offer teams a level of progression that is consistent with each team’s ability to succeed.  Directors should carefully choose their team’s division based upon the skill level their team is capable of achieving.  Skills made available to each division is not intended to be a check list.  It is merely a guideline of what you can expect of teams within the same division to utilize within their choreography  Varsity teams who are crowned a state champion in any category must move to the next highest division the subsequent year.

Elite – Varsity Division I is open to any Indiana high school team in good standings that desires to compete at the premier level of varsity competition in the IHSDTA.  Dancers in this division should be accomplished in advanced skills with a varied range of expressive dynamics, involving space, time, weight and flow.  See page 8 for legal moves in this division.  Typically this division consists of teams who also compete at the national level.  Any prior year state championship team in the Varsity Division I is required to compete in Varsity Division I for the subsequent year.

Advanced – Varsity Division II is open to any Indiana high school team in good standings that desires to compete at the advanced level of varsity competition in the IHSDTA.  Dancers in this division should be accomplished in some advanced skills with developing exploration at becoming increasingly expressive in dynamics, involving space, time, weight, and flow.  If more than1/3 of the team performs any elite skill, that team must compete in the Varsity Division I. See page 8 for legal moves in this division.  Any prior year state championship team in the Varsity Division II is required to compete in Varsity Division I for the subsequent year.

Novice – Varsity Division III is open to any Indiana high school team in good standings that desires to compete at the entry level of varsity competition in the IHSDTA.  This division is designed to encourage and reward novice level dance skills.  See page 8 for legal moves in this division.  Any prior year state championship team in the Varsity Division III is required to compete in Varsity Division II for the subsequent year

Junior Varsity — JV Division IV shall consist of any high school team designating itself as such.  Teams with more than one (1) year IHSDTA competition experience within a two (2) year period must declare themselves as Varsity.

Advanced Junior High – JH Division V shall consist of any team with 6th-8th grade membership.  Exception is made for schools with 5th or 9th grade designated by Indiana Association of School Principals as a Junior High School or Middle School (grades 5-9).

Novice Junior High – JH Division VI shall consist of any team with 6th-8th grade membership.  Exception is made for schools with 5th or 9th grade designated by Indiana Association of School Principals as a Junior High School or Middle School (grades 5-9).
