JAZZ - A dance routine should consist of a well-balanced mixture of difficulty, creativity, and good technique. Leap combinations and/or pirouettes can showcase the difficulty level of proper technique is always demonstrated. (For example, pirouettes should have correct arm placement, foot placement, spotting and performed on releve. Leaps should have height, extended legs, correct arm placement, and pointed toes.) Creative choreography will capture an audience and judges attention (interesting group work, elements of surprises, transitions, themes, etc.) Having your own "style" will distinguish your team apart from the rest.

Times: Performance 1.45--2:30 minutes. Floor 3 minutes

 

 

POM - A pom routine should consist of visually effective pom efforts, whereas, the predominant choreography effects are designed to feature the pom. However, it is important to note that since this is a "dance" competition, it does make sense for teams in pom to dance, with poms in hand. The most important characteristic of a pom routine is synchronization and visual effect. Your team should appear as "one". Motions should be very sharp, clean, and precise. A routine that is visually effective is extremely important. Visual effect includes level changes, group work, formation changes, the use of different color poms, etc. Judges will remember a routine that is eye-catching from the beginning to the end. Keep in mind that pom routines carry a more "traditional" theme, whereas, jazz routines are more stylized. Poms must be used 90% of the time. No other props are permitted.

KICK - A kick routine should consist of visually effective kick efforts. You must incorporate at least 50 kicks. (We suggest your routine have more than 50 kicks to ensure meeting the minimum requirements). A kick is defined as one foot remaining on the floor while the other foot lifts with force at least one inch from the floor. Body alignment, height, straight legs, pointed toes, proper preparation, and hook up are all important elements of a successful kick routine. Furthermore, synchronization, creativity and variety should be displayed with regularity. Props (other than poms) may be used no more than 10% of the performance time. This category is only available in Division I.

HIP HOP - Routine should consist of the latest street style/funk dance moves, with tempo variations.  Emphasis should be on execution, style, synchronization, body control, creativity, body isolation, and rhythm.  Jazzy style movements should be kept to a minimum. . However, it is important to remember that this is a “dance” competition.  No props allowed. 

Times: Performance 1.45-2:30 minutes Floor 3 minutes

 

PRODUCTION - A production routine involves the effective use of props, scenery and/or theme to illustrate the emotion of the dance. Sets can be used but are not required. This category is only available in Division I.

Times: Performance 5-7 minutes Floor 10 minutes

 

LYRICAL - A lyrical routine is an interpretive dance style that illustrates an interpretation of a musical piece. The tempo is average to slow and should show control and body placement. This category is only available in Division I.

Times: Performance 2-4 minutes Floor 4 minutes

 

 

 

SOLO - A solo routine involves one dancer. No boundaries shall be set on musical or dance style. The dancer may use props. No sets or scenery is permitted.

Times: Performance 1.5-2 minutes Floor 3 minutes

 

ENSEMBLE - This category is limited to 2-4 (small ensemble) and 5-7 (large ensemble) dancers illustrating a routine that may include all styles of dance. The dancers may use props. No sets or scenery is permitted.

Times: Performance 1.5-2 minutes Floor 3 minutes
